For this project, designed a rear garden around a mature live oak, with layered planting, a renewed lawn, and connected outdoor spaces. The goal was not to compete with its scale, but to make it the natural center of the garden.

Finished grading and new St. Augustine sod created a generous green space beneath the canopy. The irregular flagstone path was reset to establish a clearer connection between the deck and shed, while low planting softens the stone without obscuring the route. Sweet olives, sasanquas, and dwarf yaupon give the garden structure and privacy. Azaleas, Drift roses, ferns, and mahonia balance seasonal color with layered texture beneath the live oak. Jasmine and mandevilla soften the garden’s vertical edges.

With irrigation adjusted to support the new lawn and planting, the garden was built to establish and mature as one connected space. The live oak now anchors the lawn, paths, deck, and shed—open enough for everyday life and layered enough to feel distinctly New Orleans.
