Behind this Uptown New Orleans home, the garden had good bones: mature trees, a shaded patio, and the kind of enclosed space that should feel like a retreat. But the paths, planting, and edges had accumulated over time, leaving the garden feeling more pieced together than settled.

The work was about bringing order back without stripping away its character. Existing pavers were reset, new flagstone steppers and brownstone created a clearer route through the garden, and brick edging gave the planting beds a more defined rhythm.

The planting was designed to make the most of the shade and filtered light beneath the canopy. Evergreens establish a quieter backdrop, while Japanese maple, camellias, azaleas, ferns, mahonia, ligularia, and mondo grass bring movement, color, and texture closer to the paths. Irrigation adjustments support the garden as the new planting fills in.

Now the space feels less like a collection of separate areas and more like one garden: shaded, layered, and made for lingering outside.
