Before Landscape Images Ltd. began this backyard renovation in Old Metairie, the garden already had history: mature trees, brick architecture, an established lawn, and irregular flagstone worn into the landscape. What it lacked was a clear relationship between those elements. The planting felt scattered, the bed lines wandered, and the house, pergola, pool, driveway, and lawn read as separate areas rather than one garden. Marianne Mumford redesigned the property without stripping away the character that made it feel settled in the first place.

Landscape Design and Installation in Old Metairie.

Marianne gave the garden a stronger framework with boxwood, yaupon, and upright yew. Together, they repeat the formality of the front garden and create structure around the backyard. Agapanthus, Sweet Drift roses, white and colored Encore azaleas, ruffled-leaf ligularia, ferns, and hedgehog aloe soften that framework with layers of foliage and seasonal color. Meanwhile, pyracantha, Peggy Martin rose, jasmine, and evergreen wisteria bring the fences, arches, and pergola into the planting story. Sweet olives complete the transition between the driveway and pergola.

During the landscape installation, the team refreshed the beds with garden soil, sand, pine straw, and pine needles, then repaired the lawn with new sod. At the street and gate, the crew reset the flagstone and removed pieces that interrupted the path.

The result? A garden that feels like it has always belonged to the brick home—structured enough to hold everything together, but layered and relaxed enough to feel lived in.
