Uptown New Orleans | Alleyway Garden Design

Before this property came to Landscape Images, both side yards looked much like many narrow alleyways in Uptown New Orleans. They served as simple passages from the street to the rear garden, with struggling grasses, cracked concrete pavers, exposed utility lines, bare soil, and weathered fencing. They were functional, but they had never been treated as part of the garden.

Landscape architect Marianne Mumford reimagined and redesigned the two passages as one continuous garden experience wrapping around the home. Sweet olive, tree-form sasanqua camellias, and Japanese maples add height, depth, and seasonal interest. Rhapis palms, red bananas, and giant birds of paradise bring vertical texture while softening the hard lines of the house and fencing. Below them, ferns, ligularia, mahonia, and groundcovers create a lush, layered planting bed where bare soil once dominated.

The cracked concrete was replaced with brick and limestone. These timeless materials complement the character of Uptown New Orleans and become more beautiful as they age. Through thoughtful landscape design and professional installation, these once-forgotten side yards now feel like an intentional part of the property — and have become one of the areas guests notice first.
