This Lakeview backyard landscape design had room to stretch, but scale alone does not make a garden feel complete. Around the Spanish-tiled home, landscape architect Kim Alvarez used palms and evergreen structure to give the property a clear framework, then filled it with softer layers that make the walk through the garden feel different from one turn to the next. It needed to work from the house, patio, and lawn.

A Sabal palm and Mediterranean fan palms establish the garden’s height and tropical character. Eagleston hollies bring evergreen structure, while Japanese maple, sasanqua camellias, sweet olive, and pineapple guava add changing color, fragrance, and a finer texture beneath the canopy. Together, those larger forms hold the scale of the backyard without overwhelming the home.

A Rain Bird irrigation system supports the planting as it settles in and matures through the New Orleans seasons.
